Ethics Review request (Guidelines for research institutions other than the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tokyo)

The Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tokyo (the “Ethics Committee”) conducts review for various research institutions. Currently, we only accept paper-based application (Online application system is being prepared). Please contact us by email for details.

1. Important notice regarding ethics review request

Ethics review for research institutions other than the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tokyo

The Ethics Committee accepts requests to conduct review of research projects to which the “Ethical Guidelines for Medical and Health Research Involving Human Subjects” and the “Ethical Guidelines for Human Genome and Genetic Sequencing Research” apply.

Key points confirmed before requesting review

Please consult the section administering researches in your institution about requesting ethics review to our Ethics Committee and seek their advice on necessary procedures.
Please note that the Guidelines address the process that the person in charge at an institution conducting researches seeks opinion to an ethics committee about researchers’ projects and makes decisions about the implementation of researches, etc. This also applies when you outsource review, and therefore the person in charge at your research institution should request review and decide whether to proceed with the research after review.

2. Benefits of central review

The Ethics Committee accepts central review request of multicenter studies conducted by several institutions as well as review request from a single institute. In such a case, the representative researcher or office or equivalent (the “representative institution”) shall handle application documents for all the research institutions participating in the project to be reviewed by the Ethics Committee (the “institutions participating in central review”).
When the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tokyo is involved, in principle, the person in charge of researches of the Faculty will handle application documents on behalf of the research representative.

Good points of central review

The representative institution prepares and handles common research proposals, etc. of a joint research on behalf of the institutions participating in central review.
Therefore, the other researchers will not be occupied with application procedures and a research can be started promptly.

Notes:

・Research institutions’ responsibility stated in the Ethical Guidelines lies with your research institute(s).
・Please be sure to comply with your institute’s/institutes’ rules.

3. Application and review process

After we receive your request of research ethics review and decide to accept it, we will ask you to enter into a contract, which is followed by making checklists and other necessary documents.
